Weekend Gathering
Our hope is that all we do is informed by the gospel. In our weekend gatherings this means we welcome you in and treat you as family (just as God has, through Christ, welcomed us into His family), singing songs centered on the work of Jesus Christ, participating in gospel informed readings, listening to gospel preaching, and responding to the gospel through the symbols of baptism and communion.
Who will be there?
People who have followed Jesus for decades and people who are still trying to understand who Jesus is and what that means for their life.
Welcome- When you enter you’ll be greeted by others who have come to worship just like you. They will help you find your way if its your first time, point you to our resource table or (more importantly) to the coffee, tea, and whatever good eats were brought by other Mercy Hill’ers (often including some sweet homemade goodness). We want to treat you just the same as we would if you were coming to our house, so come on in, make yourself comfortable, and meet some of the family!
Singing- Part of the church’s response to what God has done for them in Jesus Christ has historically been to sing praises together. Our songs are mostly hymns, both those that have been sung by the church for hundreds of years and those that have been written by the church today. (examples of the music we sing: redmountainmusic.com; sojournmusic.com; pagecxvi.com; sovereigngracemusic.org; igracemusic.org; cardiphonia.org)
Liturgy- We see in scripture that when God reveals Himself, it calls for a response from the people. Thus our worship is marked by revelation and response. God revealed himself through scripture and most specifically and clearly in Jesus Christ.
We want our gatherings to include the participation of everyone, so during our time of singing we will also read scripture, historic church creeds, and other gospel proclamations together. One of the band members will lead us in these readings and the words will be on the screen so that everyone participate.
Preaching- We gather to listen to God’s word to us. It is through God’s word that we can know who He is and how………………………..
Lord’s Supper (aka- communion)– As a church, sharing communion is a significant event where we proclaim the sufficiency of Jesus death (1 Cor 11:26) and gratefully and joyfully acknowledging together that the death of Christ is full payment for our sin against the Holy God. If you have trusted in Jesus as Savior, we welcome you to participate in communion. If you are not yet a Christ follower, we invite you to do more than simply watch, rather please consider what’s taking place, and recognize your need for a Savior and God’s provision for you in Jesus Christ.
At Mercy Hill, we generally celebrate communion at the end of the sermon. Simply tear off piece of bread and dip it in the cup. As you do this we encourage you to ‘look back’ and ‘look forward’. Look back and think of the horror of the cross of Christ, the suffering, the blood, the agony Jesus went through to bear God’s wrath. But don’t stop there, remember this is not a funeral procession, remember the glorious resurrection and look forward to the day when no symbols are needed, because we will be with the risen Savior, Jesus Christ himself!
Offering- We also respond to the gospel through giving. We joyfully participate in giving a portion of our income in a regular and sacrificial way as a response to the sacrificial giving of Jesus, giving himself fully for His church. Offering Baskets are located up front on either side of the communion table during our gathering. Guests: please do not feel obligated to give money.
Hang-Out:
After our gathering you will find we often hang around for a while to catch up with each other and often head to a local restaurant to share a meal with old friends and get to know new ones.
